Pacquiao, Chavez will share camp for November bouts

Manny Pacquiao and Julio Cesar Chavez are likely to co-train for their November bouts under Freddie Roach and strength and conditioning guru Alex Ariza, Ariza told RingTV.com

Pacquiao will be preparing for a Nov. 12 defense of his WBO welterweight belt against arch rival Juan Manuel Marquez, and Chavez, for a Nov. 17 defense of his crown against Peter Manfredo Jr.

Ariza said that the fighters' workouts will likely be split between Pacquiao's Baguio City, Philippines, and the Wild Card Gym owned by Roach in Hollywood, Calif.

"We're going to make arrangements for them to be out here [at Wild Card Gym,] or Julio will spend at least three weeks in the Philippines with us. That schedule will be left up to Julio's management, Billy Keane, and Freddie Roach," said Ariza.

"I can tell you that both of us will be training Chavez for his fight against Peter Manfredo. That fight is going to be on Nov. 17 the week after Manny Pacquiao's fight with Juan Marquez."

Ariza said that it is undetermined whether or not he and Roach will be a part of Chavez Jr.'s planned first defense of his belt on Sept. 24, for which Chavez is said to be considering Ronald Hearns and David Medina.

"Hearns and Medina are the two front-runners," said a source familiar with the negotiations for Chavez's next bout. "One of those guys will be fighting Chavez."

Manny Pacquiao Still Invisible…

There have been numerous media reports which state that HBO is the clear front runner to host the November 12 Pacquiao – Marquez trilogy. Showtime hosted Pacquiao’s last fight with Shane Mosley on May 7 and a bidding war has erupted between Showtime and HBO to host the lucrative  Manny Pacquiao – Marquez fight.

Pay Per View (PPV) buys for Pacquiao – Mosley were in the 1.3 million range and it is believed that Pacquiao – Marquez could exceed 1.4 million. It has been rumored that one of the reasons Ross Greenburg no longer holds his position at HBO was because of Top Rank promoter Bob Arum’s decision to go with Showtime for the Manny Pacquiao – Mosley fight. HBO is under intense pressure to reel Many Pacquiao back to the reservation so to speak. With Floyd Mayweather only fighting every year and a half or so, HBO misses the huge PPV sells that Manny Pacquiao brought to his fights.

The fight between WBO Welterweight Champion Manny Pacquiao (53-3-2, 38 KO’s) and Mexican legend WBO, WBA and Ring Lightweight Champion Juan Manuel Marquez (53-5-1, 39 KO’s) will be held at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Ticket sales have been brisk since they went on sale last Friday.

Bob Arum is in the enviable position of being able to play HBO and Showtime off against each other in the bidding war to land Manny Pacquiao – Marquez. Arum allowed the rumors to flourish that HBO had the upper hand at which time Arum issued another statement saying that the final decision had not yet been made. All of this could be yet another ploy by Arum to elicit more money from both participants in the war to land the Manny Pacquiao – Marquez fight.

HBO may indeed have the upper hand. Both of the previous Manny Pacquiao – Marquez fights were on HBO. In the lead up to the fight, HBO will be able to show clips of the two previous fights, which Showtime would not be able to do.

Bob Arum, being the shrewd businessman he is will continue to milk both HBO and Showtime until he deems it appropriate to announce the winner in the ongoing bidding war.

The Harvard educated promoter has been at it for a long time and he is currently at the top of his game. If as expected Manny  wins on November 12 one thing is certain. The game will begin all over again for Manny Pacquiao next fight.

No Package Deal with Pacquiao vs Marquez, Cotto vs Margarito Fights

Despite reports that Top Rank was basically packaging their November 12 and December 3 pay-per-view events, Steve Kim spoke to Top Rank President Todd duBoef, who denied that any such package deal was in place:

The idea of packaging the two pay-per-view events (Pacquiao vs Marquez and Cotto vs Margarito) was an interesting one, as it would have required someone to, in all likelihood, overpay a bit for Cotto vs Margarito.

Kim also reported on Twitter that Top Rank is looking at October 15 for the rematch between Juan Manuel Lopez and Orlando Salido, but that's the date of HBO's PPV headlined by Bernard Hopkins and Chad Dawson. Whether or not Showtime would want to pay for a Salido vs Lopez fight when they're going to lose a big chunk of a potential audience to an HBO PPV is debatable, but it wouldn't be a shocking little risk to take.

Hopkins vs Dawson is destined to bomb on PPV (where everyone agrees it doesn't belong, but it's a budget issue), but even still, that's a night currently occupied by big name fighters. The October 15 date would also prevent HBO from bidding on the Salido vs Lopez rematch, but they just might not have any money available for it anyway.

No decision yet on Pacquiao vs. Marquez network, HBO tipped as front-runner

It is widely rumored Manny Pacquiao's November 12th trilogy fight with Juan Manuel Marquez now looks set to air on HBO and not Showtime who aired his May fight with Shane Mosley.

Stories from Philstar, Michael Marley and Fighthype earlier today all supported the idea, each of whom were informed by Top Rank insiders only for the promotional heavyweight to later announce that no official decision has yet been made.

Of course this could be Bob Arum's not so subtle way of creating a bidding war, unofficially informing Showtime that their offer needs improvement if they really want the fight. A typically shrewd move from the veteran promoter if this turns out to be the case.

Aside from the money side of things, which Arum commented recently was bigger than expected from both suitors, there appear to be two other reasons why HBO are now the favorites.

Firstly as FightHype revealed yesterday, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. is scheduled to fight on HBO after dark the following week from Pacquiao vs Marquez III, and if HBO win will do so on the same broadcast as the replay of the pay per view fight.

Chavez Jr. despite already achieving impressive numbers by himself, will gain exposure, which in turn makes money for Top Rank who will likely develop him into a pay per view so long as he keeps winning.

Secondly, Pacquiao and Marquez's fights two encounters were both broadcast on HBO.
In promoting a third clash, what better way than to remind skeptical fans how close the first two encounters were?

And for that you need the rights to the footage, which Showtime in this case doesn't have.
Alongside advertisements on both HBO and possible other Time Warner owned channels, HBO would almost certainly show the first two fights in the weeks leading up to the third fight.

As well as showing copious amounts of clips from the first two fights during the 24/7 build up series.

After the rumor was first floated that Pacquiao and Marquez would be airing on HBO, the reaction amongst some fans was to declare that the Filipino's outing on Showtime must have been a failure.

The fact that Arum is happy to flit between networks however is likely proof of nothing more than he wants to get the best offer instead of limiting himself to one option. If indeed the fight does end up on HBO it will mean only that they offered the better deal.

Also regardless of whether or not we will see an immediate repeat performance from Pacquiao on Showtime, his debut should still be considered a success.

With an opponent very few believed had any chance of winning, Showtime and CBS helped Top Rank to sell in the region of 1.3 million pay per views.

Floyd Mayweather, against a much more lively looking Shane Mosley and with his considerably larger fanbase in the United States as well as unequaled ability to sell a fight, sold 1.4 million pay per views on HBO.

Robert Staley, Pitt: "HBO must have thrown huge money Arum's way to land this one, brilliant move by Bob to start a bidding war for Pac"

Manny Pacquiao Still a Heavy Favorite vs. Juan Manuel Marquez

Short of ending Floyd Mayweather Jr.’s undefeated streak before November 12, there is absolutely nothing Juan Manuel Marquez can do to improve his betting odds heading into his match against Manny Pacquiao.

Everything that can be said about Pacquiao and Marquez’s coming fight has already been said. It’s the third part of a somewhat epic trilogy between the two men, but it’s coming at least one year too late. It looks good on paper given the history involved, but in practice it promises to be just the latest in a long line of beatings handed down by boxing’s main attraction to an overwhelmed challenger.

And, perhaps most importantly, this is just a roadblock for Pacquiao -- a stepping stone of sorts to his supposedly inevitable clash versus Mayweather at some point in the near future.

After the Pacquiao v. Marquez III fight was initially announced, Pacquiao was a staggering 8-1 favorite. This obviously served in stark contrast to Marquez’s +500 odds, signifying his risky bet status in the eyes of linesmakers. Some assumed that a good showing by Marquez in his scheduled bout against Likar Ramos last Sunday would alter the odds a bit, shifting them moreso in the 36-year-old Mexican fighter’s favor.

As it turns out, not even a dominating victory by Marquez over his Colombian counterpart could accomplish this feat. Despite knocking his opponent out at the 1:47 mark of the first round, Marquez remained a heavy underdog for his bout against Pacquiao.

What does that mean for the fans? Well, if there are any particularly loyal and devoted Marquez fans out there, now may be the time to place a hefty wager on him. Of course, for what it’s worth, Pacquiao has been a favorite in every match since his 2008 romp of Oscar De La Hoya, so there are probably safer bets out there than this.

Pacman tiff to be aired on HBO?

MANILA, Philippines - HBO just won’t let the big fish get away – a second time.

After losing out to Showtime in airing the Manny Pacquiao-Shane Mosley bout last May, it seems that HBO has won the bidding war regarding Pacquiao’s fight with Juan Manuel Marquez on Nov. 12.

Pacquiao’s adviser, Michael Koncz, said he would talk with Top Rank chief Bob Arum today regarding the decision but he did not confirm nor deny that HBO had sealed the deal.

“Bob and I will talk tomorrow,” Koncz told The STAR.

A report, however, came out of Fighthype yesterday saying HBO may have gained the inside track because of its HBO World Championship boxing card featuring Julio Cesar Chavez on Nov. 19.

The report said Top Rank could show the replay of the Pacquiao-Marquez fight alongside the HBO card while Showtime, as of presstime, couldn’t put up a card the week after the Pacquiao bout.

“The decision to go with HBO would make the most sense for Top Rank, which will no doubt be looking to use the replay to help maximize the exposure of Chavez Jr,” wrote Ben Thompson of Fighthype.

But more than that, it’s probably all about the money involved.

Arum, who had received and reviewed the bids from both HBO and Showtime, had said that the third clash between Pacquiao and HBO could be worth as much as $15 million.

For the Mosley fight, which sold more than 1.3 million pay-per-view hits with Showtime/CBS, it was worth around $10 million.

HBO just couldn’t afford to lose airing a Pacquiao fight a second time. All it had to do was up the ante.

“To prevent another Showtime coup, HBO is bringing out the heavy guns by involving their parent company, Time Warner,” wrote Lem Satterfield of www.boxingscene.com some weeks back.

Arum said it was unbelievable how Showtime and HBO, which had sold over five million PPV
buys in probably half a dozen fights with Pacquiao, wants this one so bad.

“It’s unbelievable. They’re offering for the promotion an unbelievable amount of support. Like I’ve never seen before,” said Arum.

PACQUIAO VS. MARQUEZ III LIKELY HEADING TO HBO PPV

Sources close to the information have informed us that it looks like the long-awaited third bout between pound-for-pound champion Manny Pacquiao and lightweight king Juan Manuel Marquez will likely be distributed by HBO Pay-Per-View. Promoter Bob Arum, who has been vacationing in Paris, was said to be mulling over offers from both HBO and Showtime to televise the November 12th showdown, but according to our source, plans are already in motion to air the replay the following weekend on an HBO World Championship Boxing bout headlined by Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. "He'll be on the rebroadcast of the Pacquiao/Marquez fight, which will be shown to millions. He's going to be headlining the HBO World Championship Boxing [card] that same weekend of the Manny Pacquiao/Marquez replay," our source revealed.

"He put up real numbers. It's all because of the viewing and the people that supported and watched him fight Zbik. He came out and put on that kind of a show and that's why Bob put him on and HBO gave him that kind of a date," the source explained, referring to the fact that Chavez Jr.'s title-winning effort against Sebastian Zbik drew 1.5 million viewers, the highest HBO Boxing After Dark numbers since a 2007 bout between Paulie Malignaggi and Lovemore N'Dou. Considering that Showtime has yet to secure any meaningful fight for the Saturday following Pacquiao-Marquez III, the decision to go with HBO would make the most sense for Top Rank, who will no doubt be looking to use the replay to help maximize the exposure of Chavez Jr.
